Dunaszentmiklós. Dune is a terrible movie, yet I love it so. If nothing else, it got me to read the book. But the amazing thing about the movie is that the plot is so muddled that you could see it before reading the book and not have to book spoiled for you. I don't know who thought that David Lynch was the right person to write and direct this story. Dune isn't a surreal story. It's a pretty straightforward, albeit elaborate space opera.
The acting was terrible. It's like watching elementary school kids doing Shakespeare. Poorly. Not a single player in the movie turns in a good performance. But then how could they, what with the screenplay being such a mess?
Having said that, there are a few areas in which Dune succeeds. Namely, the costumes and the sets. They got the look of this universe down. If only the rest of it were half as good as the sets and the costumes then we might have something approaching a decent movie.
File Dune under so bad it's kinda good. I'm not laughing with the movie, I'm laughing at the movie.

God emperor and chapterhouse seemed to me as difficult books with hidden meanings, not like the heroic first ones. However they offered me visions unparalleled in sci fi. The spice is life... What about the rest of the saga. there are a few more books. I'll never understand people who hate this movie. I wonder how Paul's life would have played out if the emperor never conspired against his family. So down for the remake. For many/most who did not read Frank Herbert's novel prior to seeing the movie, most everything they witnessed would be frustratingly incomprehensible. Frank Herbert created such detail in his Dune universe that it really takes a chunk of time to assimilate his achievement. It is a great achievement, probably one of the best sci fi novels ever created, but bringing it to film brings about all sorts of challenges. My own opinion is that Dune cannot be done justice without a TV series that could last 12-13 episodes, one hour each. And even then I think there should be some running caption at the bottom of the screen to remind us to which certain phrases refer. Herbet supplied an anthology at the back of his book, so you need something like that either at the bottom or side of the screen to be reminded what various terms imply. A fully detailed film adaptation of Dune would be expensive. especially if you add in any extras such as side commentary. And even then the result would be uncertain. I think Dune can be and should be brought to film as an extended TV series with a large budget. I admire the SyFy Channel's attempt, but it still required much more time than was allocated. especially pulling in Children of Dune. I think a film adaptation is possible, but it would take a large budget and a lot of work. Using the TV series format seems like the best way to get most of the detail on screen.

Exurb1a, I have a lot of trouble staying focused on one thing at a time, and lectures and other educational videos are terrible, as I can't sit still or focus on a single static screen. You are amazing though. Because of all of the dynamic audio and visuals, I was able to stay focused because of how active this video was. Thanks for making a video that can match my head.

I saw this film in 1984. I watched it on TV a couple of weeks ago. In 1984 I thought the movie was bad. The story made no sense, the acting looked like a high school play and the score was to the ears what a visit to the dentist is to the mouth.
After watching this epic on television in the year 2000 I have reevaluated my opinion of it. It is actually dumber, duller and a bigger waste of time than I had previously thought.

LONG LIVE DUKE LETO. Many years ago I tried watching the movie, never passed the 15' mark. A few years after that I started the book. And just yesterday I stumbled upon your edit and finally got round to watching it. I am glad I did, you got yourself a pretty kino movie. Dunas del este.

My picks would be: Nick Hoult, Billy Skaragard (kinda fitting) Harry Treadaway, Evan Peters, Lukas Hedges, and in a stretch, Alex Lawther. I think Paul and Feyd are around the same age? Idk. Bashar Miles Teg was a bad arse. To make all warriors seem like toddlers. His only weakness was his tiredness after expending his energy.

I've just been brought to this truly amazing edit today via Brian Eno's Prophecy Theme. I loved the film when it came out and read the books following that. Barring the possibility that the rumoured hours and hours of footage ever materialise, this now surely stands as the definitive version. It must have taken you ages! Thank you. You have my gratitude.

Just watched this at the weekend, a great piece of cinema, I always thought DUNE was great but flawed in its studio-release cut all those years ago, so flawed like a paint-by-the-numbers painting with some areas painted and filled in but with many blank spots, a disjointedness and a lack of coherence, a beautiful tapestry but somehow the sense of being unfinished, incomplete. Gaps of story and knowledge, narrative interrupted, flow of scenes somehow not natural. Now these problems have seemingly vanished before out eyes ; structural integrity and narrative fluidity have returned, sense and meaning cohere ( like a distant blur coming back into focus* and order of storyline, feeling strong and complete, the sense of storytelling itself is now beautifully realized, complete. I cant imagine this DUNE being any better and I have loved DUNE for years, this cut is perfection as far as Im concerned, fans of this film and David Lynch owe You a tremendous debt, DUNE fans, film lovers in general and historians ; the film is made new yet familiar, an amazing achievement ; everything is as it should be with every decision and artistic flourish fulfilled. We all owe spicediver our sincere gratitude, as do I, THANKYOU.

Thank you for posting it's 15th times I watch it since it came out. 👍. Dune is a movie that has to be seen as any movie. As it was made back in the day. Nothing to be changed. Just see it and judge it for what it is. It is a complex and deep movie. It is heavy but that's what is good about it. It's not an imitation of star wars as some are claiming.

This is the movie that got me reading books. i seen it as a kid and loved it,but dident understand what the hell was going the opening title I found out it was based on a book,I jumped all over it,my favorite novel series of all time and made me an avid live the fighter.
